FOREST PARK, Ill.– “Forest Park is the perfect place to celebrate Halloween,” said Laurie Korkenes, executive director of the Forest Park Chamber of Commerce.
And the village in suburban Chicago celebrates it every year with a coffin race!
Forest Park was named the “Village of Cemeteries” because its cemeteries buried 50 times more people than residents above ground. Forest Park hosts this annual competition to bring builders, racers and the community together.
Teams are tasked with building unique “Schatuller” box trucks and winning races to win trophies specially created by artists from the Forest Park Arts Alliance. And even if you don’t finish first in the race, you can still get a trophy for last place and for funniest and scariest caskets.
The event draws residents and spectators of all ages and seeks to truly bring Halloween to life in the community.
