‘School For Good And Evil’ ending explained – Netflix hints at a sequel

If all goes according to plan, Netflix’s latest YA adaptation could happily continue for many years to come.

Based on the first book in the six part series by Soman Chainani, The School of Good and Evil follows two best friends – Sophie (Sophia Anne Caruso) and Agatha (Sofia Wylie) – as they are whisked away to the eponymous institution where fairy tale heroes and villains are made. The catch? While Agatha ends up comfortably in the school of good, Sophie is “mistakenly” put in the school of evil.

The schoolmaster (Laurence Fishburne) insists his institution doesn’t make mistakes, so the best must learn under the tutelage of Clarissa Dovey (Kerry Washington), the dean of the School for Good, who gets to rival Olivia Pope in scene chewing on level ; and Leonora Lesso (Charlize Theron), the dean of the School for Evil who appears to share a hairdresser with Johnny Depp’s Willy Wonka.

Complications arise when Sophie and Agatha meet Tedros (Jamie Flatters), a Prince Charming with all the bells and whistles. Anyone with even passing knowledge of it Evil can predict how this love triangle will unfold: a smitten Sophie makes her interest and availability overused, but Tedros is far more taken with Agatha, who routinely challenges his princely perception of the world around him.

As the weeks go by, it becomes clear that Sophie and Agatha are right where they belong; Agatha discovers she has the power to restore cursed beings to their original form, while Sophie’s dark abilities are endorsed by Rafal (Kit Young), the schoolmaster’s presumed dead evil brother.

The School of Good and EvilAlthough Agatha helps Sophie impress Tedros enough to get her invited to the annual Ever Ball, it’s all downhill from there. Schools are thrown into chaos, Sophie and Tedros are punished, and the girls’ friendship is all but torn apart. Rafal, disguised as the schoolmaster the entire time (surprise!), takes further advantage of the situation by gifting Sophie with forbidden blood magic.

Then things come Yes, really dark when Rafal convinces Sophie that he has always been her true love. Their kiss wrecks both schools, triggering torrents of blood, canned screams, and general devastation. Or as Rafal puts it, “Welcome to Never After!” Agatha and Tedros arrive for the final battle against Rafal, which ends with Agatha delivering the final blow. And though Sophie almost succumbs to her injuries, she is ultimately saved by Agatha’s kiss, “for what is truer than love between friends?”

With Rafal defeated, the two schools are finally united, allowing good and evil to coexist in harmony. Sophie wants to return to Gavaldon alone, but Agatha can’t let her best friend fly alone, so she kisses Tedros goodbye and leaves the school.

“And that’s sort of the end of our story,” says Cate Blanchett. Or is it? Pre-rolling in the credits, we see one of Tedros’ arrows pierce the maelstrom between worlds with a message: “I need you, Agatha!” Though Blanchett still says it, this is of course “just the beginning” of the story.

It’s hardly surprising that the film would end like this, since Tedros’ arrows piercing the vortex is a central plot point in Chainani’s second book. A world without princes. However, in the book, Tedros’ message tells Sophie to go back to school, while the film only mentions Agatha’s name.

At this point, it remains unclear whether Netflix will keep the franchise going. The reviews have not been kind, but many poorly-reviewed projects have been trumped by passionate fandoms in the past.
