Netflix has released the trailer for the fifth season of The crown on Thursday, which will delve into some of the royal family’s more salacious scandals of the ’90s. Namely, the escalating tensions between Charles III and Princess Diana and the infidelity that led to the couple’s divorce.

But it was the affair between Charles and his now-wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, that really set the tabloids on fire. And in 1993, scandal rocked the royals further when a 1989 private phone conversation between Charles and Camilla was leaked to the press. At one point in the six-minute conversation that became known as “Tampongate,” Charles essentially told Camilla that he’d like to live in her “pants” and be reincarnated as a tampon.

Not really! Below is the transcript of exactly what was said between the two:

Karl: Oh God. I just live in your pants or something. It would be a lot easier!

Camilla: [Laughing] What do you want to turn into, panties? [Both laugh]. Oh, you’ll come back in knickers.

Karl: Or, God forbid, a tampax. Just my luck! [Laughs]

Camilla: You are a complete idiot! [Laughs] Oh what a wonderful idea

With that sexual chemistry, it’s perfectly clear why they’re still together to this day.

In any case, The crown couldn’t incorporate this humiliating tidbit before because when vanity fair pointed out this week that actor Josh O’Connor, who portrayed Charles in seasons three and four, absolutely refused. “When they offered me the role, one of my first questions was — I say questions, I think it was pretty much a statement — ‘We don’t do a tampon call,’” O’Connor told SirusXM’s EW Live in May 2020 .

However, in the fifth and sixth seasons, the future king is played The cable Actor Dominic West not getting out of Tampongate as easily as he has recently Weekly entertainment.

“I remember thinking it was something so dirty and deeply embarrassing [at the time]’ he told Entertainment Weekly of the conversation. “If you look back on it and have to play it, you realize that the fault wasn’t on those two people, two lovers having a private conversation. what is real [clear now] is how intrusive and obnoxious the press attention was that they printed it out verbatim and you could call a number and listen to the actual tape.”

West, who has been embroiled in a dating controversy himself, continued, “I think it made me very sympathetic to them both and what they were going through.”

Anyway, good luck to West in dismissing phrases like “I just live in your pants” as anything but spasmodic and hilarious.

Anyway, we’ll find out soon enough when season five of The crown Premiered on Netflix on November 9th. In the meantime, you can check out the trailer below.
