New reports show that a Uvalde police officer missed an opportunity to open fire on the Texas school shooter and that law enforcement never attempted to open the classroom door where the shooter was located.

That New York Times reported that a police officer from Uvalde may have shot and killed Salvador Ramos before entering Robb Elementary School.

“At least two police cars arrived at the school in quick succession,” according to the New York Times. “One was driven by an officer from the small police force that patrols Uvalde’s schools. Another arrived less than a minute later at 11:32 am with officers from the Uvalde Police Department.”

At the time, the shooter was reportedly outside the school – he was shooting inside the building and at a funeral home. According to Zavala County Chief Deputy Sheriff Ricardo Rios, responding officers believed the gunman shot them.

The two officers took cover behind a police cruiser.

“They tried to return fire, he said, but held back,” the Times said, adding that one of the officers was armed with a long gun.

Rios said, “I asked him, ‘Why didn’t you shoot? And then he told me about the background. According to the officers, they didn’t fight back because children were playing in the background and they were afraid of hitting the children.”

The opportunity to eliminate the shooter allegedly only had a window of a few seconds.

Rios understood the decision, adding, “The ranger who took my statement even said, ‘It’s got to the point where we’re contemplating shooting someone because we’re scared. Every bullet has our names.’”

A report from the San Antonio Express News claimed that cops never tried to open the doors of Robb Elementary School – where the shooter was.

“Surveillance footage shows that police never attempted to lock a door to two classrooms at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde in the 77 minutes between entering the rooms and the massacre of 21 people, when officers finally broke through the door and killed him open,” the San Antonio Express-News reported, citing a law enforcement source involved in the investigation. “Investigators believe the 18-year-old gunman who killed 19 children and two teachers at the school on May 24 could not have locked the door to the connected classrooms from the inside.”

This source allegedly said police may have assumed the school doors were locked. However, according to the information, the doors are only locked or unlocked from the outside.

The report claimed police officers may have attempted to open doors rather than trying to find keys to gain entry.

Uvalde CISD Police Chief Pete Arredondo allegedly tried to obtain keys to open the school doors.

That Texas Grandstand previously reported, “The tools of liberation never materialized, but Arredondo had also asked for keys that could open the door. Finally, a caretaker provided six keys. Do not open.”

The San Antonio Express-News reported, “Separately, officers at all times had access to a ‘halligan,’ a crowbar-like tool that could have opened the classroom door even if it was locked, the source said .”

The Times added: “Ramos entered Robb Elementary School at 11.33am that day through an external door which a teacher had pulled shut but which did not automatically lock as intended, indicating another malfunction of the school’s door locks .”

The San Antonio Express-News noted, “Police finally broke through the door to Classroom 111 and killed Ramos at 12:50 p.m. Whether the door was unlocked the whole time is still under investigation.”
