‘Survivor’ Season 43 Episode 5: [Spoiler] Eliminated — end the interview

The following contains spoilers from Wednesday’s episode survivor 43.

Not all advantages can be saved from Jeff Probst’s ruthless torch extinguisher.

On Wednesday survivor, Geo Bustamante was chosen to embark on a magical Fiji voyage where he became the lucky recipient of the Knowledge is Power perk. Ironically, despite that small fortune, it was his lack of knowledge of his tribe that prevented him from rising through the ranks and he was booted from the game by a 3-2 vote. (Read a full synopsis here.)

Knowing he was down, why was he so comfortable and does he have any hard feelings towards Karla? Also, Ryan Yes, really Throw this immunity challenge? We asked Geo all of this and more in our Q&A below.

TVLINE | What about Cassidy made you and Ryan love her so much?
GEO BUSTAMANTE | I try not to be negative or say anything bad about anyone. I respect everyone’s game. But with Cassidy, we had a few disagreements. From my point of view, it started with chopping cassava. Since I was always at the bottom, I tried to do as much as possible to make everyone happy. Then, on a random day, she looks at me and says, “You should start cutting the food into different shapes so we feel like we’re eating something different.” I looked up and thought, “Did she give me that?” really just told you?” I’m tired! I wake up looking for food and idols in case I go home… I’ve been busy all day! When I’m done cooking, I put the last piece of yucca in my mouth before we go to a challenge. I’m always doing something and somehow I felt like I was doing it. I had to walk away from it and I spoke to Karla and Ryan like, “I can’t believe this is happening!” It is survivor! Why are you complaining about the food? There are so many people dying to be on the show. I’m upset that I’m not eating enough!

Fun fact: I told Karla and Ryan what happened, then Karla went and told Cassidy what I said and Cassidy got mad and came back to me and said, “Someone told me something, but I’m not going to tell you.” , who.” I said, “I know who, it was Karla.” I confronted Karla and said, “I know you work with them, but I really want to work with you. Please give us a chance. It could be me, you and Ryan to the end.” But she’s obviously chosen the other side.

TVLINE | Why did you and Ryan feel so comfortable and how much did Karla contribute to that?
I’ll tell you right now, I’ve made myself comfortable. I agree. I felt safe to a point knowing I was working with Karla and Ryan, but I was always scared. I was always at the bottom, but no matter what happened, I didn’t want to lose a challenge because I might go home. That confident thing, I don’t know where it came from. I don’t remember being that confident. I don’t want to blame it on the editing because I ended up doing that when I was on the show, but I was scared. I tried not to be paranoid in front of everyone and give them a reason to vote me out. But I was voted out anyway.

Survivor episode 5TVLINE | Looking back over the last week, the women seemed to think you were power hungry. What do you make of it?
It’s funny because all those things that were said about me being power hungry… I don’t remember any of it! i won’t lie to you I’ve seen the edits and the way they position certain words and certain things. I can see how it came across because even when I saw myself on TV I was like, ‘When did I say that?’ or ‘How did I say that right after This happened?” I was trying to put things together. And being in charge? I was excited about something that was happening, but there was a part where I was telling people what to do on the show. We actually had one lengthy conversation about who should go home and why they should work with me and not so-and-so I remember saying, “You choose Cassidy, you choose Cassidy… OK, cool.” and make me look like I’m the one telling people what to do. I’m a very shy person in real life. Move on survivor was the challenge of my life. I challenged myself to get out of my comfort zone. I don’t do that, I don’t tell people what to do or give them orders because I’m not like that.

TVLINE | Do you know for sure if Ryan actually threw that immunity challenge?
Before the challenge, he asked me, “What if I throw the challenge so Cassidy can go home?” I thought, “Don’t do that! I’m at the bottom, I could be the one going home!” I get it. I felt like Karla wanted to work with us and that made me feel a little more comfortable, but I could tell something was wrong. I didn’t want to risk it just so we could take down Cassidy because that could actually backfire, and it did. I don’t know if he threw the challenge or not. He was really fine. We almost won that challenge, then out of nowhere, boom.

Survivor 43 episode 5TVLINE | Had you survived the vote, what was your plan for the Knowledge is Power perk and did you know about Karla’s idol?
I was very excited to get the benefit of knowledge is power because it was like a dream come true. I’ve been looking for an idol every day because I thought, “Maybe if I find an asset or an idol, I can protect myself from going home,” but I never found anything. I climbed every single tree. I didn’t want to go home and say, ‘I should have climbed that tree. I knew that tree looked weird!” I didn’t want to go home with regrets.

After having this benefit, I was the happiest person. I knew two tribes were working against us, so I wanted to share it with my alliance. I wanted to use it for us. It wasn’t just my thing. So I’m a bit confused as to where the whole “power hungry” thing comes into play. I wanted to use it for the people I worked with. I wanted to be loyal with someone and take another tribe’s idol and use it to our advantage. I ended up sharing this information with Karla hoping that she would trust me a bit more and maybe work with me. It did not work. I feel like I’m already a sitting duck [and people were] waiting for me to just go at this point. But you never know! The whole Lindsay Paranoid thing happened at the last minute, and I ended up staying another episode. I was only hoping for the best to be honest.

TVLINE | Any hard feelings towards Karla?
At first I kind of felt somehow because we had a connection. She came up to me and said, “You’re LGBT, I’m LGBT. You’re Latino, I’m Latina. We’re both minorities, we should work together.” I didn’t want to approach it that way because I didn’t want to work with someone just because of their sexuality or race. I wanted to do it because I can feel your energy and you are a good person. That’s why I felt a certain way, because I chose to put my heart into whatever conversations she and I had. It hurt a little, but I’m over it. That’s part of the game. There is no rule against it. She was smart to use this to her advantage, gaining my trust and eventually taking me down. There was so much they couldn’t show. We had many beautiful moments and conversations, her and I, but they didn’t show any of it. That’s just part of the game. That makes survivor Nice. That’s why people love it. People like the sneaky and the weirdness that happens. I’m still watching. I’m still a fan of survivor. Even if I didn’t like myself that much on last week’s episode because I’m not like that, that’s okay. That makes it a really good show at the end of the day.

Survivor 43 episode 5TVLINE | You shared your coming-out story on the show, explaining how she ended your relationship with your parents. How was the reaction of the viewers?
At first I didn’t want to share it because I was afraid people might look at my family like they were mean or homophobic. But I felt it was important for me to share this story so that other people like me who have been through what I have been through can see that it could be you. You could go through depression. You might question being alive, but don’t give up. Just keep going cause it gets better. You will get what is yours and maybe one day you will be in it survivor and make your dreams come true. I wanted the world to see that and I just went for it.

I got so much love from people. Not just LGBTQ people, but also straight people who write to me and say, “My son is gay, my so-and-so is that,” and seeing people like me I think is eye-opening. Not everyone is so lucky. Not everyone has their whole family. i have mine now I have my chosen family, the friends that I have. But I wanted to show that to the world. The love was amazing and I’m thankful for it. At the end of the day I didn’t win survivor, but if I can help someone out there and someone sees my story and contacts me, “Hey, thanks for sharing. I absolutely had to hear that”, it was all worth it to me. When I’ve made an impact on at least one person out there, it really makes me happy. I am honored to have had this experience. ‘Survivor’ Season 43 Episode 5: [Spoiler] Eliminated — end the interview
